Zambian Kwacha (ZMK)
Sign ZK
1 Zambian Kwacha is subdivided into 100 ngwee.
The official unit of currency in Zambia is the Zambian kwacha, listed as ZMK. Inflation rates tend to run high in Zambia and prices throughout the country are typically listed in kwacha as well as US Dollars and other common foreign currencies. Different businesses often base their prices on the type of currency used.
Banknotes used:
-frequently 50, 100, 500, 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 kwacha
-rarely 20 kwacha

The kwacha is issued in banknotes in denominations of ZMK 20, ZMK 50, ZMK 100, ZMK 500, ZMK 1000, ZMK 5000, ZMK 10000, ZMK 20000 and ZMK 50000. Coins are issued in denominations of ZMK 5, 5 and 10 and in 25 and 50 ngwee. Most larger bank branches will provide foreign currency exchange and cash traveler’s checks. Larger banks have ATMs that accept the Visa card and will provide cash withdrawals, dispersing funds in kwacha.
There are foreign exchange offices, known as bureau de changes that are located in larger cities and towns as well for foreign currency exchange. Many larger airports and hotels also have exchange desks. Exchanging foreign currency should be done only at authorized banks and bureaux de change offices. Banks are typically open from 8:15 am until 2:30 pm on Monday through Friday. Some branches are also open from 8:15 am until 10:30 am on the first and last Saturday of each month. Exchange offices normally offer longer hours and most are open on Saturdays throughout the month.
Currency exchange rates can be viewed inside bank lobbies and by reading daily newspapers from larger cities. Because there are high levels of credit card fraud involving ATMs, visitors are advised to be careful when using these for cash withdrawals. Large sums of money should not be exchanged in busy areas and should be restricted to inside bank lobbies or inside offices of exchange bureaus. Traveler’s checks can be cashed at banks or exchange offices and US Dollars, euros or Pounds Sterling are preferred. Other foreign currencies may incur a rather high rate of exchange for traveler’s checks.
Restrictions are placed on importing and exporting local currency. The limit of kwacha that is permitted to be imported or exported is currently ZMK 100. There are no restrictions on importing or exporting foreign currencies although all cash should be declared with customs upon arrival in the country or upon leaving Zambia. A black market exchange is available in the country but exchanging currencies via black market is illegal and can be punishable by fines or imprisonment. Visitors are advised to bring foreign currency in US Dollars or euros and to avoid $100 banknotes and any paper currency printed prior to 1998.
