Yemeni Rial (YER)
Sign ﷼
1 Yemeni Rial is subdivided into 100 fils.
Yemen is a small, rather poor country in the Middle East. Oil is the main economic booster for Yemen and accounts for nearly 70 percent of all the revenue in the country. The rial is the official unit of currency in Yemen and is subdivided into 100 fils. Banknotes are issued in denominations of YR 10 which are very rare as well as YR 20, YR 50, YR 100, YR 200, YR 500 and YR 1,000. Each banknote is translated into the English language on one side with Yemeni language on the other side. Coins that are still in circulation include the YR 5 and the YR 10 coin. Most people in the country will refuse to accept torn or otherwise damaged banknotes for exchange or purchase.
Coins used:
1, 5, 10, 20 rials
Banknotes used:
50, 100, 200, 250, 500, 1000 rials

Many of the larger hotels in the country as well as various travel agencies quote prices in US dollars and some are beginning to offer quotes in euros. Payments are expected in Yemeni rials most of the time but a few tourist locations accept US Dollars and euros as forms of payment. Exchanging foreign currency into the rial is a much easier way to pay for goods and services.
Banks offer fairly low rates for foreign currency exchange. While there are foreign exchange offices located throughout the country, the best rates often come from banks. There is no black market in Yemen so exchanging money on the street will not fare you a lower rate. Foreign exchange offices can be found in larger towns and cities and are typically a bit faster than most banks. They are open from 9:00 am until 9:00 pm every day except for Friday while banks are typically closed by 4:00 pm. Banks are more likely to offer exchanges for travelers checks although some foreign exchange offices do provide this service.
Rates for foreign currency exchange may vary from business to business. Most banks and exchange offices typically have rates listed inside the establishment. Current rates can also be checked via daily newspapers from larger cities and online. Commission is not normally charged for exchanging foreign currency but offices in smaller areas may charge a low commission for this service.
Travelers checks are often difficult to cash at all if not in a large city. Changing travelers checks into the riyal can cost from 3 to 5 percent of the transaction or more in some areas. Those exchanging foreign currency will need to keep a receipt for the transaction in order to exchange again prior to leaving the country.
