These are currency exchanges that are done by travel agents and carpet shops. Changing money legally will get you a Foreign Exchange Encashment Receipt which will show you exactly the amount of money that you have exchanged. Changing money can be difficult in some areas so it is best to change the entire amount that you will need when visiting certain areas of the country.

The Nepalese rupee is divided into 100 paisa. Coins are distributed in denominations of 1, 2, 5 and 10 rupees. Banknotes are issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 rupees. Getting change for a 1,000 rupee banknote can be difficult in smaller areas so visitors should ensure that they have smaller notes in hand when traveling far outside major cities.

Most establishments in Nepal will accept the US Dollar as well as pounds sterling and the euro as form of payment. The Indian rupee is also accepted widely although the INR$500 and INR$1,000 notes are no longer accepted anywhere in the country due to forgery. Official currency exchange rates are set by the Rastra Bank of Nepal and are provided in daily newspapers.

Visitors can also exchange money at the airport terminals. All major terminals offer exchange counters and banks or moneychangers at border crossings. Travelersí checks can be difficult to cash even in the larger cities but credit cards are accepted in most places. The best private banks for currency exchanges are the Himalaya Bank Nepal Ltd and the Standard Chartered Bank. Many hotels and resorts offer legal money exchange as well and several provide lower rates than private banks or government institutions.

When exchanging currency visitors will need to provide a passport. It is important to keep receipts from currency exchanges in order to exchange rupees back into hard currency when leaving the country. Most moneychangers will offer currency exchanges back into hard currency without a receipt.
